During 9 months of 1942, 33,561,770 barrels of oil were transferred to 154,291 tank cars from the Big Inch pipeline. The New York Central (Big 4) Railroad pulled the cars from Norris City for the war effort in Europe and to alleviate the east coast fuel shortage. Norris City was a target for air strikes because of this critical infrastructure.
